Why was ".com" chosen for a school's domain?Actually, ".com" is not our only domain. You can also surf here through http://UxbridgeSS.durham.on.ca. We don't advertise this address, however, for obvious reasons. IT'S TOO LONG! We can't have http://UxbridgeSS.ca because top level ".ca" domains are only for federal corporations. Naturally, .edu would be the ideal choice for a school's domain. This extension is, however, reserved for colleges and universities. That left ".com", ".org" and ".net". O-R-G would be an unfortunate choice for a high school (try spelling it out one letter at a time). ".net" just doesn't seem professional. That left us with only ".com"! Besides, the majority of surfers don't realize that ".com" represents a commercial organization, ".com" is simply assumed. Therefore, it was the ideal choice. Also, when using Netscape, all the user has to enter is UxbridgeSS. The browser assumes the "www" and the ".com". We hope this has cleared up any confusion! |
